Found the name of the Korean restaurant we ate at....Royal Yakiniku.
3/2/06....Out of bed late as usual...10.30am. Drat. Walked along Kalakua Avenue and enjoyed seeing all the tourists, mainly Japanese. Looked around Waikiki Shopping Centre. Looked at most shops including another Ukelele shop. Went upstairs and looked at Wah Hing Jewelry & Arts on 2nd floor and saw something I really like - Netsuke's.......I purchased two really nice ones with descriptive faces and with great detail on them - Paid $500 for two. Bargained hard to get $100 off the original prices she wanted. I have two of these at home which I have had for over 30 years and are nowhere near the quality of these ones and they are continually appreciating in value as the ivory is no longer a supply (except illegally). These were old stock as they cannot get any more, particularly from China. Don't know about Hong Kong.
Walked further along Kalakua and it started to rain so had to duck in to a shop and buy "rain cover". Purchased from Iguasu Boutique a very nice Hawaiian made spray jacket with embroidery on the front for $45.00- wash n wear material. Bit pricey but did the job of keeping me dry and warm.
Walked around Fort De Russey and to Wailana Coffee House on Ala Moana Boulevarde and had a very late lunch. Very good menu, reasonable and so much to choose from. It was obviously a very popular eatery as people were constantly being "turned over". Don't pick so much to eat as the portions are huge. I ordered Beef Lasagne which came with soup first, which meant I could only eat half of the Lasagne.
More walking back along same route and got to Waikiki Gateway Hotel and it is quite obvious that all roads lead to this Hotel as it is in a prime position. It appears to be for the moderate income traveller. We turned at Kuhio Avenue and went back to Hotel. That evening we ate at Chilli's which was very good. Again heaps to choose from on the menu. The Salsa sauces are much more spicier than we have at home.
Had a phone call from Mangy- good to speak to her, pity we could not catch up. If we were not so jet-lagged and waking up late, we stood a chance of getting over to the Big Island for a day trip.
Also another call from a daughter of one of my Christadelphian friends. She said she would come and pick me up to take me over to Kailua to have a Church meeting. Pick up was to be 9.15am for the 5/2. The alarm bells rung in me as to how I was going to get up that early.
By now sleep was difficult and I had purchased some antihistamine from Walmart.....bad news as I found out the next day.
4/2/06.
Felt like a lead balloon when woke up and found it hard going. Mr Jebbo wanted to get moving. We decided to walk the opposite end of Waikiki along Queens Surf Beach Park, past the Natatorium War Memorial. Watched the outriggers....must have some sort of carnival or race day as there were hundreds of them.
Walked back and look at the Art Display set up near the Zoo....nothing took my fancy.
By the way, in all the time I have been in Waikik and looking at many shops I did not see any work by Diana Hansen-Young. It would loved to have seen it as the style in the picture sent by Gablin appealed to me.
Had lunch at Lu-Lu's Waikiki Surf Club....can't remember what I ate!!! but I know it cost $26.00
Walked down to Kings Village Waikiki and had a good look around at the shops.....seems they are a bit off the tourist drag and the shops have "Sale" signs in the windows. This Centre is interesting as they are beautiful shops and it has a "changing of guard" which is interesting to watch at 6pm.
We went into a lovely shop "Regal Decor" which sells lovely ceramics, cards, nic-nacs etc. I purchased two "harlequin" cats made by Goebel (famous for its Hummel figurines) for $50.00. Whilst we were in there a lady came in to bring the proprietor of this some shop Lavash and Garlic/butter spread. We were invited to taste it and it was really nice (a lovely gesture). Then we decided to walk further up the ramp and see her friend who brought this snack in. She was at the Jade Tree ....now jewellery is I something I just cannot go past. I saw a lovely Hawaiian 14k handmade bracelet in the pattern of hibiscuses along it...there goes $460 US!!!!. ....are'nt I good to the US economy.
Forgot to mention when we went into Maui Divers the other day to see the staff who the Cherub used to work with, they showed us the top floor where the best jewellery is marketed. After leaving us, the very pushy commission paid staff proceed to get you into the "buying mode". They showed me a lovely Tanzanite and Diamond ring (the diamonds were nice but were not top quality as she would not tell me what colour they were)- wanted $2800 US for it (after starting at $4000). I told her it was far too expensive in comparison with the Tanzanite I had purchased in Juneau. End of story and had the ability to walk out without purchasing anything.
Walked back to hotel and had a discussion where we were having dinner. Mr Jebbo wanted to eat at Sam Choys but decided it would be good to walk there, until the Hotel staff said you should take a taxi as its in an industrial area. At this point, we were starting to feel tired, so we decided to eat in at Trellises.....Can't say its a first class restaurant for this brand of Hotel. Mr Jebbo had seafood and it was "just". My meal was lamb with some sort of a sauce which made it extremely bitter. Gor we're a bunch of complainers are'nt we but when you expect good food from a upmarket establishment, particularly in a hotel with a restaurant attached, you would expect top quality. First time we had bread brought to our table, and it was appreciated as its something we are used to in OZ. Mr Jebbo organised the wake-up call for 7.15 am. AAGGHH.
5/2 Up at 7.15 by early morning phone call reminder. ....what an effort. Struggled but was down in the lobby in time to be picked up. They drove me over to Kailua which was a route familiar to me as the Cherub used to live on base at Kaneohe. The "meeting" was a lot different to what we have at home, there being only five people at the meeting (including myself). Afterwards they took me to lunch at an Italian Restaurant down at the local shopping centre. Was pleasantly surprised at the standard of the food. (did'nt take note what it was called).
Got back to hotel at 1.pm. Mr Jebbo had just got back from a long walk taking movie pics of Waikiki.
We decided to do a round the island tour on Monday, so organised it from the Tour Desk at the Hotel. Decided on the Royal Circle Island Tour - cost $62.50 through E Noa Tours.
Dinner that night after a long discussion was at Matteo's on Kuhio Avenue. This is an expensive restaurant but its meal quality did not match the price. I ordered a Beef Lasagne and I am not joking when I say the Bechamel Sauce sat on it just like icing....you could peel it off. It is meant to be soft not hard. Mr Jebbo had an interesting Seafood combination in a very nice garlic sauce. We shared a Bananas Foster. Meal cost $101.
Another early morning call arranged to get us out of bed for the Tour.
6/2/06 The reminder call woke us at 7am so we could be ready for the bus to pick us up outside the Hotel at 8.15am. It was 1/2 hr later before we boarded that bus, so I guess something or someone held them up as we could have stayed in bed another 1/2 hr!!
Stopped at Hanauma Bay which is absolutely stunning with crystal clear water. Wish we had that in Townsville.
The swimming is quite safe within the Reef but if you venture beyond it you could get into strife.
Next stop Halona Blowhole...you have to be patient if you are taking pictures for the right wave to come in, in order for the hole to "blow". To the right is the beach where Deborah Kerr & Burt Lancaster did the beach scene where they embraced in the "longest kiss" - two minutes I believe. Movie was From Here to Eternity.
Makapuu Point....interesting spot for viewing Kaneohe and the beaches/waves.
Lunch stop at Ko'olau Golf Club......If the pax had known there was an organised lunch, they would have opted out of it. Most looked disappointed that this was automatic. It was buffet style which had mainly breads, salads, cooked salads, couple of meat dishes, cold meats, desserts also. Mr Jebbo made a sandwich with the various vegetables and I picked out the veges I liked and bread....very small amount we ate and they charged for our salad meal $11.00 each....bit rude. The hot meal was $13.95. I would have preferred they went to a Pizza Hut, MacDonalds etc and you could have what you felt like....and time would'nt have been the essence in that case as an hour would have seen everyone get their meal.
Next stop was the Beyodo Inn Temple (this is a replica of one in Kyoto - as usual religion is a business. It was here that you could see really big carp in the lake. If you wanted to you could buy food to feed the fish.( I guess the entrance fee was included in our Tour price as everyone who was coming in independently had to pay)
Then on a long drive to the surfing areas and saw really big surf.
