New Jersey has this antiquated law that restricts the number of liquor licenses that can exist in a municipality to 1 per x population. I don't know what x is, but apparently they haven't updated the population figures since about 1950, so you practically have to wait for someone to die to get one and they're dreadfully expensive. One town near where I used to live, Ridgewood, was full of family restaurants that were all BYOB. It was great- you knew you weren't being ripped off for wine. Unfortunately, food prices were a little higher because they didn't get any profits from selling alcohol!
