Nowadays people fly down and rent a car.

Actually, the Auto-Train still operates. In the 1970s it was run as a private company from Lorton, VA to Sanford, and it was so successful that they even started a second route, from Louisville to Sanford to tap the Chicago market. The second route did very poorly, and after a disastrous derailment on the main route Auto-Train went out of business. Amtrak picked up the Lorton-Sanford segment and bought many of the auto carrier cars, and it remains today as Amtrak's longest train.

As an aside, does anyone remember the old "Saturday Night Live" skit with Bill Murray as Nick the lounge singer on the Auto-Train? it was one of the better Murray segments on that show.
