31/1//06 Checked in at Townsville and cases were checked all the way through to Honolulu, and seat allocations provided all the way through.
We had tried for upgrade, but because this was a real cheap fare, no chance of upgrade, even though we tried, even in the Qantas Club.
QF 973 left on time at 13.05pm. Boeing 737-400, seating at 7a & 7c. Flight time just under 1.40. Lunch was served about 1/2 hour after climbout. Olive Tapenade Bread sandwich with Eggplant, Zucchini Capsicum and lettuce.....hardly palatable to the connoisseurs taste! (you guys might like this sort of meal) Where do they get their ideas for these concoctions which, I am sure, not many pax enjoyed, Mr Jebbo and I being included. I think the Qantas chef Neil Perry needs talking to. Alcohol had to be paid for - $5.
Arrived in BNE at 13.05pm slightly ahead of time. Walked from Gate 20 to Qantas Club and picked on snack food, potato salad, nuts guacamole dip and corn chips until boarding call for QF 549 BNE-SYD at 16.55pm. 737-800
Flight left on time, seat 9E & F, plane absolutely chockers. Snack pretzels and nuts served and alcohol free (particularly on Cityflyer flights). Arrived at Sydney - just over an hour flight and also a change of time....Sydney is on daylight saving time and is one hour ahead of Brisbane...grrrrrrr. This meant we had to get off our flight, and go to Gate 2 which takes you downstairs to the bus for international transfer to the international terminal. We had just missed a bus, so we had to wait 20 mins for the bus, which duly left us with little time to do any Duty Free shopping. I had just looked quickly at goods on display, and decided I wanted a light green pashmina which cost me $39.95. The staff member was slow in processing my payment and Mr Jebbo was urging me to " come on" as they were already boarding on our next flight
Syd-Hon. QF 3 747-338 seats 26 H & K. Flight time under 9 hrs 20 mins. Departure on time, could'nt see much on take off from Sydney as it was dark. Dinner served after levelling out :
Green Leaf Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette
Choice of: chicken Cacciatore with Green Beans and Potato Mash.....this was really nice (full marks Neil Perry)
or Braised Beef with Tomato and Onion
Spiced Apple & Custard
Coffee, tea and unlimited alcohol if you wanted it.
Settled down to a pretty uncomfortable ride in cattle class- the two pax in the seats in front of us decided they wanted all three seats fully stretched back...quite often ths lass turned around to complain that I was annoying her as she could feel every movement I was making on the tray table!!!!! It was only the Flight Attendants who helped in getting them to put their seats forward so we could eat!!
Breakfast:
Choice of Continental Breakfast
Orange Juice
Seasonal Melon in Fruit Juice
Cereal
Muffin
or Hot Breakfast
Orange Juice
Seasonal Melon in Fruit Juice
Muffin
Scrambled Egg on French Toast with Bacon and Chipolata
(very rich)
coffee, tea
The shades were put down about half way into the flight. Mr Jebbo watched movies and I watched some of Proof, but decided reading was better. Both of us tried to get some sleep but could'nt - tell me who can on a plane unless you take a sleeping tablet.
Lights turned on at 4.30am and could see sunrise out the window.
We purchased a duty free Bang & Olufsern headset - $AU$195 and Mr Jebbo says they are great.
Arrived in Honolulu at just after 9 am and then a long taxi to terminal and once off the plane, headed to immigration and the usual long wait in the "aliens" queue..to make it hard a JAL flight had just landed and those pax too were rushing for the immigration counters!!
After having left index finger, right index finger fingerprinted and eyes photographed we moved through to pick up our luggage. Waited for luggage to come off and walked over to the Waikiki shuttle area. Cost to hotel $8 each way each. After a long ride got to the Radisson Prince Kuhio.....the time 11.00am.
The staff at the Hotel advised us that our room was not ready and we could leave our bags and come back later. We decided to stay put in full view of the counter as we were both "knackered". We finally got advice that our room was ready at just after 1pm.
Our room was nice - twin beds, view looking towards the waterfront (at least we could see the ocean) and we were on the 15 floor. We paid $1391 AU for 7 nights.
Decided to get into bed and see if we could get some sleep but no go. So got up about two hours later and walked along Kuhio street and had a look around.
Had dinner at a Korean Restaurant on Liliuokalani Ave -
was'nt bad, the Korean BBQ plate was far too hot as our meat was cooking too fast.
Got to bed about 11.00 pm and still could'nt get to sleep....1/2 sleeping tablet taken to get me off.
1/2/06 Pinch and a punch for the first of the month and no returns.....got Mr Jebbo.
Both of us woke up at 10.30 am!!!!! Obviously we were jetlagged and finding it hard to get back to our normal waking hour. I gave myself a shock when I realised I had left my Pashmina on the plane...phoned Qantas to report it missing and nothing was found. Could'nt do anything about it..my own fault for not checking my seat area before I got off the plane.
Decided to walk down Kuhio.....and walk, and walk, and walk till we got to Keeaumoku Street. Walked up to Maui Divers to have a look around as this was where the cherub worked when she lived in Hawaii. Walked back down Keeaumoko to Ross.....let me at it. We were there for about two hours.....kept the US economy going with the great bargains (although they do have a slight flaw which you are hard pressed to find). Great place to pick up childrens clothes. I purchased a Silk Angora Cardigan, was $58.00, paid $12.99....great.
Then went to Wal Mart and Ala Moana Centre where we got the Pink Trolley back to the Radisson (cost $2 each).
Ate at a Mexican not far from the Radisson (forgot its name)....food good but too spicy for me.
Into bed late again after 11pm
2/2/06
Late in getting up again. Walked to Aloha Tower area....don't know what how far it is, but I would guess over four miles. Mr Jebbo had tried drinks at Gordon Birsch Brewery. Then we made the mistake of going into the Hawaiian Ukelele Co....we were there for a good while and came out with two Ukelele....not the cheap stuff. Mr Jebbo splashed out with a top class Koa one at $665.55 and I purchase a cheapie on special. Walked back to Ala Moana Centre and had dinner at Bubbagumps.
Had something to eat at the Food Hall - plenty of choices.
